Overview

Colon sits at the Caribbean entrance to one of human engineering's most audacious achievements. The Panama Canal cuts through mountains and jungle to connect two oceans, and watching massive cargo ships rise and fall through the locks is genuinely awe-inspiring. Gatun Locks, just outside the city, lifts vessels 85 feet in three dramatic stages. The original French equipment and locomotives that guide ships through remain in use today. Beyond the canal, Fort San Lorenzo perches on a cliff at the Chagres River mouth, its Spanish fortifications dating to 1601 and offering Caribbean views. The Colon Free Zone ranks as the world's second-largest duty-free zone after Hong Kong. While the city itself shows wear from economic hardship, it serves as the jumping-off point for rainforest adventures, indigenous Embera village visits, and Caribbean coast exploration. The canal remains the star - watching a Panamax ship thread through those locks makes you appreciate human ambition.
