Overview

Astoria sits where the Columbia River crashes into the Pacific, and that dramatic setting has shaped everything about this historic port town. This is where Lewis and Clarks expedition reached the ocean in 1805, and the maritime history still dominates—from the Columbia River Maritime Museum to the century-old Astoria Column with its panoramic views. Victorian homes climb the hillsides (youll recognize them from "The Goonies"), while the revitalized waterfront mixes brewpubs, coffee roasters, and seafood shacks. Fort Stevens State Park has beach exploration and a partially submerged shipwreck you can walk right up to at low tide. The weather can be moody—fog, rain, and wind are part of Astorias personality—but thats what makes the microbreweries and cozy restaurants feel so good. It's Pacific Northwest authenticity without the Portland crowds, where working canneries still operate alongside craft cocktail bars.

Top Sights

  • Astoria Column
125-foot tower crowning Coxcomb Hill with a 360-degree panorama over the Columbia River, Pacific Ocean, and Coast Range mountains. The 164-step. spiral staircase and your ability to throw wooden gliders from the top make this.
  • Fort Stevens State Park
Historic military fort protecting the Columbia River entrance from the Civil War through WWII, now offering beach access and the Peter. Iredale shipwreck. The rusted iron skeleton of the 1906 wreck emerges from the sand.
  • Columbia River Maritime Museum
One of the countrys best maritime museums with Coast Guard rescue boats, commercial fishing exhibits, and the lightship Columbia you can. board. The Columbia Bar crossing simulations show why this river mouth is called the.
