Overview

Gibraltar rises 426 meters from the Mediterranean as a dramatic limestone monolith that's been contested for centuries. This tiny British Overseas Territory packs serious punch - famous Barbary macaques roam freely (Europe's only wild monkey population), while the cable car whisks you to spectacular views spanning two continents and two seas. St. Michael's Cave descends into otherworldly limestone chambers filled with stalactites, and the Great Siege Tunnels reveal hand-carved passages where British forces defended against 18th-century Spanish attacks. At Europa Point, the lighthouse marks where Atlantic meets Mediterranean, with Morocco visible just 14 kilometers across the Strait. Main Street offers duty-free shopping with a distinctly British flavor - fish and chips, red phone boxes, and pubs serving warm beer. The Rock itself is a nature reserve crisscrossed with hiking trails including the challenging Mediterranean Steps. Despite covering just 6.7 square kilometers, Gibraltar delivers outsized history, nature, and that surreal experience of British culture baking in Mediterranean sunshine.

Top Sights

  • The Rock of Gibraltar
Iconic 426-meter limestone monolith dominating the peninsula. Cable car access or hiking trails lead to panoramic views of two continents.
  • Barbary Macaques
Europe's only wild monkey population - 160 tailless macaques roam the Upper Rock. Playful, photogenic, and occasionally mischievous about bags.
  • St. Michael's Cave
Stunning natural grotto with massive stalactites and stalagmites. Ancient Romans thought it was bottomless and connected to Africa by tunnel.
  • Great Siege Tunnels
Hand-carved passages through solid rock using only black powder, hammers, and chisels during the 1779-83 siege. Remarkable engineering feat.
  • Europa Point
Southernmost tip where Mediterranean meets Atlantic. Historic lighthouse, mosque, and clear-day views across to Morocco's Rif Mountains.
  • Gibraltar Skywalk
Glass-floor platform jutting from cliff edge over 340-meter drop. Not for the faint-hearted but views are extraordinary.
