Haines, Alaska

Haines sits at the northern end of the Inside Passage where deep fjords meet snowcapped peaks in one of Alaska's most dramatic settings. Unlike many Southeast Alaska ports, Haines is connected to the road system (the Haines Highway links to the Alaska Highway), giving it more year-round life beyond cruise season. The American Bald Eagle Foundation protects hundreds of eagles, and in late fall, the Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve hosts the world's largest gathering of bald eagles (over 3,000) feeding on late salmon runs. Fort William H. Seward, the areas first permanent U.S. Army post, now houses artists studios, galleries, and the Alaska Indian Arts center. The towns arts scene thrives with local craftspeople, painters, and the famous Hammer Museum (seriously, its all hammers).
