Overview

Ísafjörður is an adventure into the *real* Iceland. This is the largest town in the Westfjords, but it's still a tiny, charming fishing village, set on a narrow spit of sand that juts out into a dramatic, steep-sided fjord. The town itself has some of the oldest houses in Iceland. But the real reason you're here is the staggering, isolated nature. This is a place for hiking, kayaking in the pristine fjord, or taking a boat to Vigur Island to see thousands of puffins, eider ducks, and seals. This is an escape to the edge of the world.

Top Sights

  • Dynjandi Waterfall
Seven-tiered waterfall cascading down mountainside in Westfjords. The 100-meter falls widen dramatically as they tumble toward the fjord.
  • Hornstrandir Nature Reserve
Pristine wilderness accessible only by boat with Arctic foxes and seabird colonies. Day hikes reveal some of Iceland's most remote and dramatic landscapes.
  • Westfjords Heritage Museum
Maritime history in restored wooden buildings along the waterfront. The museum chronicles fishing traditions in these harsh northern waters.
  • Hot Springs Trail
Natural geothermal pools in remote valleys requiring hiking to reach. Soak in hot water while surrounded by mountains and absolute silence.
  • Vigur Island
Puffin colony and traditional eiderdown farming on tiny island. Boat tours visit the working farm where down is still harvested by hand.
  • Town Center
Colorful houses and Iceland's oldest building dating to 1734. The compact downtown preserves wooden architecture rare in Iceland.
