Lanzarote, Spain (Canary Islands)

Lanzarote looks like it belongs on another planet—and that's not hyperbole. This UNESCO Biosphere Reserve is defined by its volcanic terrain: jet-black lava fields, rust-red craters, and golden beaches that feel almost surreal against the Atlantic blue. The island owes much of its character to César Manrique, the visionary artist and architect who insisted that development work with the landscape rather than against it. His influence is everywhere—from the subterranean concert hall inside a lava tube to the cactus garden built in an old quarry. Timanfaya National Park is the main event, where geothermal heat still radiates from eruptions that reshaped the island in the 1730s. Between the raw volcanic drama and the artful human touches, Lanzarote delivers something no other island can.
