Overview
Naples is a full-on sensory assault in the best possible way. This is the raw, gritty, and passionate heart of southern Italy. But its also the jumping-off point for two bucket-list destinations. You can journey back 2,000 years to Pompeii, the vast, Roman city that was perfectly, and tragically, preserved under volcanic ash from Mount Vesuvius. Walk its stone streets, enter its homes and temples, and feel the history. Or, you can take a 45-minute hydrofoil to the island of Capri, the ultimate, jet-set, Mediterranean dream. Ride a boat to the electric-blue Blue Grotto, take a chairlift to the highest peak, and soak in the pure, movie-star glamour.
Top Sights
Archaeological Park of Pompeii
This is the main event: a vast, 170-acre, 2,000-year-old Roman city, frozen in time by the 79 A.D. eruption. of Vesuvius. It's a haunting, full-day, must-do experience to walk its ancient streets.
Island of Capri
The legendary, jet-set, Island of Dreams. Take a 45-minute hydrofoil to this stunning, limestone rock, famous for its. Blue Grotto, its chic, designer-filled Piazzetta (main square), and its breathtaking natural beauty.
Spaccanapoli
This is the 2,000-year-old, arrow-straight, Roman-era street that famously splits the historic, UNESCO-listed, chaotic heart of Naples. It's not. one street, but a series of them, and its the soul of the city.
Herculaneum (Ercolano)
The other city destroyed by Vesuvius. It's much smaller, more compact, and arguably better preserved than. Pompeii, with its two-story buildings and carbonized wooden furniture still intact.
Naples National Archaeological Museum
If you cant get to Pompeii, this is the next best thing. This is the world's single-best museum for Roman art. housing the *actual* mosaics, frescoes, and statues that were excavated from Pompeii and Herculaneum.
Mount Vesuvius
The 4,200-foot volcano that is the cause of it all. You can take a bus part-way up and then hike the. final 30 minutes on a gravel path to the rim of the crater itself.
