Overview
Toulon is the authentic, unpolished, working side of the French Riviera. This is, first and foremost, the massive, historic, home-port of the entire French Navy, and its harbor is one of the most beautiful in Europe. The city itself is a gritty, energetic, port town with a beautifully revitalized, pedestrian-only, old town, filled with fountains and daily food markets. The main event is to take the 7-minute, bright-red, Telepherique (cable car) to the top of Mont Faron. The 1,900-foot, flat-topped, limestone mountain has a staggering, jaw-dropping, panoramic view of the harbor and the entire coastline. This is your gateway to the *real* Provence.
Top Sights
Mont Faron
The mountain looming over Toulon accessed by cable car offers panoramic views over the harbor, city, and Mediterranean. The zoo and WWII memorial at the summit add reasons beyond the views.
Vieille Ville
Old Toulons narrow streets, Provencal market, fountain squares, and 17th-century buildings create an atmospheric historic. center. The morning market in Cours Lafayette is authentic Provence.
Musee National de la Marine
Frances naval history on display in a building overlooking the military port, with ship models, paintings, and artifacts spanning. centuries. Toulons status as Frances major Mediterranean naval base makes this contextually powerful.
