Overview

Sitka stands apart from other Southeast Alaska ports—it faces the open Pacific rather than the Inside Passage, and its Russian colonial history gives it a completely different vibe. St. Michaels Cathedrals onion domes and the Russian Bishops House are reminders that Sitka was once the capital of Russian America (1808-1867). The town sits on Baranof Island surrounded by Tongass National Forest, with Sitka Sounds island-dotted waters stretching to the west. The Raptor Center rehabilitates injured bald eagles and other birds of prey, while Sitka National Historical Parks coastal trail winds through old-growth forest lined with totem poles. Sea otters float on their backs in the harbor, and humpback whales feed in the sound year-round. Fortress of the Bear has close encounters with rescued brown bears in a natural setting.
