Overview
Skagway exists because of the Klondike Gold Rush of 1898, and the entire downtown is a National Historical Park preserving that boomtown era. Broadway Street looks like a movie set with wooden sidewalks, saloons, and buildings that housed the fortune seekers who passed through on their way to Yukon gold fields. The White Pass & Yukon Route Railroad climbs from sea level to 2,865 feet in just 20 miles, clinging to cliffsides with views over waterfalls, glaciers, and the trail of 98. This is the most scenic train ride in North America, hands down. Hiking the Chilkoot Trail (or parts of it) traces the stampeders route, while the Skagway Museum and gold rush cemetery tell the stories of those who never made it. The towns tiny year-round population swells to thousands when cruise ships dock, but the surrounding wilderness and history remain untouched. Skagway is Alaska at its most accessible—concentrated history, dramatic scenery, and easy walkability all in one spot.
