Overview
St. John's is one of the oldest European-founded cities in North America — a salt-and-fog harbour town of candy-colored row houses stacked above one of the safest natural harbours on the continent. Signal Hill guards the Narrows, where Marconi pulled the first transatlantic wireless signal out of the air in 1901; just down the coast, Cape Spear marks the easternmost tip of North America, with whales offshore and, each spring, icebergs drifting down "Iceberg Alley." Water Street has been doing business since the 1600s, and George Street crams in more pubs than seems reasonable for its length. This is working-port Atlantic Canada at its most characterful — weathered, warm, and proudly its own, right down to the Newfoundland accent and a clock that runs a half-hour off everyone else's.

Signal Hill & Cabot Tower
The hilltop fortress crowning the harbour entrance, where Marconi received the first transatlantic wireless signal in 1901. Sweeping views over the Narrows and the open Atlantic, and a prime perch for whale and iceberg watching.
Cape Spear
The easternmost point in North America, marked by Newfoundland's oldest surviving lighthouse (1836). Dramatic cliffs, WWII gun batteries, and front-row seats to whales and spring icebergs.

The famous rainbow row houses, plus Water Street (one of the oldest commercial streets in North America) and George Street, which packs in more pubs per square foot than almost anywhere on the continent.
