Overview

Stornoway is the capital of Scotlands Outer Hebrides, where ancient standing stones, peat bogs, and wild Atlantic coastlines define the landscape. The town itself is small and functional—a working port with shops, pubs, and the imposing Lews Castle overlooking the harbor. But the real draw is the islands prehistoric sites, particularly the Callanish Stones (older than Stonehenge) standing in eerie formation across the moorland. The Blackhouse villages at Arnol and Gearrannan show how crofters lived for centuries in traditional thatched stone cottages. The Butt of Lewis lighthouse marks the islands northern tip, where cliffs drop into the churning North Atlantic. Lewis tweed is still woven by local crofters, and you can visit studios to see the traditional methods. The landscape is stark—treeless, windswept, and hauntingly beautiful in that Scottish Highlands way.
