Virgin Voyages launched its tiered fare system — called VoyageFair Choices — on October 7, 2025, replacing the old one-price-fits-all model with three distinct levels for Sea Terrace and below cabins. Each Virgin Voyages fare type bundles a different combination of flexibility, WiFi, dining access, cancellation rights, and included perks. The tier you choose affects when you can book restaurants, whether you can change names or dates, what happens if you cancel, and even whether your cabin location is assigned for you or chosen by you. This guide breaks down every fare type side by side — Base, Essential, and Premium — so you can pick the right one based on how you actually sail.
VoyageFair Choices applies to all Sea Terrace and below cabin categories booked on or after October 7, 2025. Sailors choose between Base, Essential, or Premium at the time of booking. Each tier sets the rules for your entire voyage — from cancellation terms to WiFi speed to how early you can reserve restaurants. RockStar and Mega RockStar Suites follow their own policies and aren’t part of this three-tier structure.
This change also introduced service gratuities as a separate line item — $20 per Sailor per night if prepaid before the voyage, or $22 per Sailor per night if charged onboard. That charge applies identically across all three tiers.
The lowest price available. Base strips away nearly all flexibility in exchange for savings. No cancellations, no refunds (excluding taxes and fees), no date changes, no name changes on any Sailor. No Future Voyage Credit if you cancel. No Bar Tab included.
One detail that catches Sailors off guard: Base fare does not let you choose your cabin location. You select a cabin category — Insider, Sea View, or Sea Terrace — and Virgin assigns your specific cabin within that category. Cabin changes are not allowed after booking. Essential and Premium Sailors choose their cabin type during booking and can request changes later if availability allows.
WiFi: Basic (one device per Sailor — browsing and messaging only). Dining reservations open just 15 days before sailing.
Best for: Sailors with completely locked plans who won’t need to change dates, names, or cabins — and who don’t care about early restaurant access.
The middle tier and the one most Sailors should default to. Essential restores the flexibility that defined the pre-October 2025 booking experience: cancellation rights with refund or Future Voyage Credit options (depending on timing), the ability to change voyage dates 46 days or more before sailing (new date must be within one year of the original), and name changes for Sailors 2–4 on the booking. The lead Sailor (Sailor 1) cannot be changed.
WiFi: Classic (one device per Sailor). Dining reservations open 45 days before sailing — a full month ahead of Base. No Bar Tab included.
Best for: The majority of Sailors. Essential delivers enough flexibility to handle normal plan changes, a dining window early enough to book the restaurants that matter, and a price point only modestly above Base.
The most inclusive standard fare. Premium includes Premium WiFi for two devices per Sailor (streaming and video calls), a 60-day dining reservation window, full cancellation flexibility, date changes 46 days or more before sailing, and name changes on all Sailors — including the lead booker. It also includes a Bar Tab credit, though the exact amount varies by sailing and should be confirmed during checkout.
Best for: First-time Sailors who want everything bundled, group organizers who need full name-change flexibility, and anyone who would purchase Premium WiFi and a Bar Tab separately anyway.

Cancellation terms are where Virgin Voyages fare types diverge most sharply. These policies apply to bookings made on or after October 7, 2025.
Base: All payments are 100% non-refundable (excluding taxes and fees). No grace period, no Future Voyage Credit, no date changes, no name changes. If you cancel, you lose everything.
Essential: If you cancel 121+ days before sailing and within 7 days of creating the booking, you get a full refund. After that 7-day window (still 121+ days out), your deposit is non-refundable (and any other payments are refunded). From 120 to 46 days before sailing, voyage fare payments convert to a Future Voyage Credit and you can change to a new sail date (both within one year of the original sailing date). At 45 days or less, voyage fare payments are non-refundable — but you may change the names of co-travelers (not Sailor 1) up to 48 hours before departure.
Premium: If you cancel 121+ days before sailing and within 7 days of creating the booking, you get a full refund. From 120 to 46 days before sailing, voyage fare payments convert to a Future Voyage Credit and you can change to a new sail date (both within one year of the original sailing date). At 45 days or less, voyage fare payments are non-refundable — but any Sailor name on the booking may be changed (or the booking transferred) up to 48 hours before departure.
The 7-day grace period does not apply to bookings made within 120 days of sailing, since full payment is required at that point. For full details on repricing and cancellation strategies, see our dedicated guide.
The dining reservation window is one of the most underappreciated differences between Virgin Voyages fare types. On Virgin Voyages, the most popular restaurants — The Wake, Pink Agave, Test Kitchen — often fill their pre-cruise slots within hours of opening. Premium Sailors get first access at 60 days. Essential Sailors open at 45 days. Base Sailors don’t open until 15 days before sailing.
By the time Base’s 15-day window opens, the best dinner times at the best restaurants are already taken. You’ll still eat well — walk-in availability and embarkation-day releases fill gaps — but if booking specific restaurants at specific times matters to you, Base puts you at a serious disadvantage.
Pro Tip: If you’re traveling with multiple cabins on different fare tiers, dining reservation timing may be constrained by the latest-opening window for each Sailor included in the reservation. A Premium Sailor trying to book a table for four that includes a Base Sailor may not be able to reserve until the Base window opens. Book your dining-critical tables with only Premium/Essential Sailors first, then adjust once Base opens.
Base fare Sailors do not choose their cabin location. You select a cabin category — Insider, Sea View, or Sea Terrace — and Virgin assigns a specific cabin within that category. Cabin changes after booking are not allowed on Base.
Essential and Premium Sailors choose their cabin type during booking, and cabin changes are permitted later if availability allows. This matters more than it sounds — cabin location affects noise levels, elevator proximity, views, and whether you end up in a cabin you’d rather avoid.
Booking Tip: If you’re booking Base and care about your cabin location, work with a First Mate at Serious Sailors — we can help communicate preferences to Sailor Services, though Base fare assignments are ultimately at Virgin’s discretion.
Premium costs more than Essential upfront, but the included perks can make it the cheaper option depending on what you’d buy separately. The key add-ons to compare:
On most 7-night sailings, if you’d buy Premium WiFi and any level of Bar Tab, Premium fare can cost less than Essential plus those add-ons. The math gets even stronger on longer voyages — a 14-night transatlantic crossing doubles the per-day values, making Premium often the smarter buy if you’d use WiFi and drink onboard.
Pro Tip: Compare at checkout, not in the abstract. The price gap between Essential and Premium changes by sailing, cabin category, and promotional offers. Your First Mate at Serious Sailors™ can run the exact comparison for your specific voyage and tell you which tier saves the most.
Lock-It-In is a promotional fare Virgin Voyages offers periodically — it shares Base’s rigid cancellation terms (100% non-refundable, no date or name changes, no FVC) but typically at an even lower price point. The Base vs Lock-It-In comparison is worth reviewing if you see both options during checkout. Lock-It-In Sailors can still participate in Level Upgrade bids — and if a bid into a RockStar or Mega RockStar cabin is accepted, the booking will have suite-level perks.
If your Level Upgrade bid is accepted, your original VoyageFair Choice carries through — a Base fare stays Base after upgrading cabin category. Note: suite perks may apply based on the upgraded cabin category.
For My Next Virgin Voyage (MNVV) certificates, once you convert to a sail date and choose Premium, you can change names on the booking — but fare changes may be limited after booking.
On Base fare, Virgin assigns your cabin within the category you booked — you don’t choose the location, and cabin changes aren’t allowed. Essential and Premium Sailors select their specific cabin during booking and can request changes later if availability allows.
Yes — Virgin Voyages offers a 24-hour hold if you’re booking more than 45 days before the voyage. No payment is required during the hold period. For online direct bookings, a credit card is required at booking but the deposit isn’t charged for 24 hours.
Shore Things open 120 days before the voyage start date for all Sailors, regardless of fare type. RockStar Quarters Sailors get early access at 135 days — but that early window applies only to Sailors actually staying in RockStar cabins, not to companions in other cabin categories.
Reservations aren’t required — you can always walk in or visit The Galley without one. But for popular restaurants like The Wake, Pink Agave, and Test Kitchen, pre-voyage reservations at your preferred times fill quickly. Check the app repeatedly after your window opens — cancellations and new inventory appear regularly.
Essential is the right Virgin Voyages fare type for most Sailors — it delivers the flexibility, dining access, and cabin choice that made Virgin popular, without paying for perks you might not use. Premium earns its price when the included WiFi and Bar Tab would cost more as separate add-ons, which happens on most 7-night and longer sailings. Base works only if your plans are locked, you don’t value early dining access, and you’re comfortable with Virgin assigning your cabin location. If you want help running the exact comparison for your sailing, reach out to your First Mate at Serious Sailors — we’ll tell you which tier saves the most based on what you’d actually buy.
