That option is no longer stated in the terms for new purchases.
This change appears aimed at closing the name-change loophole people were using to resell certificates. Under §2.9 of the updated terms, the offer is generally not transferrable, and a name change is only allowed once the booking is converted to a sail date and Premium is selected.
Most other MNVV terms remain the same. The $150 deposit, the two-year book-and-sail window, Sailor Loot values, voyage fare discounts, and cabin eligibility requirements are unchanged. The only shift is who can use the certificate — and when a name change is allowed.
Virgin’s MNVV FAQ page still states that an MNVV “can be transferred one (1) time while it is still a placeholder booking.” The updated August 6, 2026 terms directly contradict this. The legacy clause in the updated terms explicitly states that Virgin Voyages will honor the terms “as existing at the time of purchase” for MNVVs bought before August 6, 2026. These certificates keep their original rules, including any one-time placeholder transfer allowed under the prior terms.
If you have a pre–August 6 MNVV still in placeholder status, you retain the most flexibility of any generation. Transfer it before converting to a sail date — once converted, the booking follows fare tier rules for name changes.

Sailings shorter than four nights are excluded. Each Sailor can hold up to four MNVVs, but only one can be applied per reservation. Sailor Loot cannot be rolled over for back-to-back voyages and is always provided in USD. Sometimes — but the process and the risks have changed. You can still use your MNVV to book a voyage for someone else by converting the placeholder to a specific sail date while you’re onboard. The critical difference is what happens after that booking is made.
Pro Tip: If you’re booking an MNVV voyage for someone else, always choose Premium. An Essential booking where the recipient cancels means your MNVV deposit effectively belongs to someone else as an FVC. Premium eliminates that risk by allowing a name change on the reservation — and the MNVV terms prohibit downgrading once Premium is selected, so this is a one-way decision. Make it deliberately.
Once an MNVV is converted to a specific voyage, name-change rights follow the same rules as any other booking under Virgin’s Ticket Contract:

The most common — and most expensive — mistake is converting an MNVV to a sail date before completing a transfer. Once a placeholder becomes a live booking, it can never revert to placeholder status. At that point, transferability is governed by your fare tier, not the original MNVV terms.
If you convert to a sail date and book under Essential or Base, the lead Sailor name is locked. Canceling generates a Future Voyage Credit in the booked Sailor’s name — meaning you lose both your $150 deposit and any voyage discount. The person you intended to gift the voyage to now holds the FVC, and FVCs are non-transferable.
Booking Tip: If you have a grandfathered pre–August 6 MNVV and want to transfer it, do so while it’s still a placeholder. The moment you convert, your transfer rights disappear and fare tier rules take over. This is exactly why understanding what happens to your MNVV if you cancel matters before you make any moves.
Cancellation rules depend on whether the MNVV is still a placeholder or has been converted to a voyage:
The key distinction: if you let a placeholder expire without proactively canceling, you get nothing. Cancel it after day 7 and at least you receive an FVC. Don’t let the clock run out.

The new date must fall within one year of the original chosen voyage date and still within the two-year window from your original placeholder registration.
Once converted, a booking cannot revert to placeholder status. The date change does not reset your two-year clock — it simply moves within it.
The updated terms are unambiguous: MNVVs are not available for Sailor or Travel Advisor resale. Placeholders acquired via resale are void and non-refundable. Virgin Voyages reserves the right to cancel bookings made with resold placeholders and retain the original deposit. Travel agents are equally prohibited from purchasing or acquiring MNVV placeholders from individuals or third parties.

MNVVs apply to Sea Terrace and above only. Insider cabins, Sea View cabins, solo cabins, Limited View Sea Terrace, Sea Terrace (Slightly) Smaller Balcony, and any Lock-It-In rate (except RockStar/Mega RockStar Lock-It-In) are excluded.
