You’ve heard the one tip everyone gives about Virgin Voyages Scarlet Night: wear red. Now you want the practical answers. Which night is it on your sailing? What does a man who doesn’t do costumes actually wear? Can you see the good part and still be in bed by 11? This guide covers how to find your Scarlet Night, an 8-to-11 plan that gets you the best of the evening, and easy outfits that need nothing new from the store.
You’ll find out once you’re onboard. Virgin doesn’t publish a fixed night, and your onboard schedule in the app is the only reliable source. Virgin’s entertainment FAQ points Sailors to onboard programming rather than giving a rule like “Night 2” or “the night before the last sea day.”
This explains why forum answers contradict each other. Some sailors swear it’s night two or three. Others say second-to-last, or the night before a sea day. Each of them is probably describing their own sailing accurately. No single pattern holds across every ship and itinerary.
Pro Tip: If you’re booking restaurants before you sail, grab a few 6:00–6:30 PM slots across the middle of the voyage. Whichever night turns out to be Scarlet Night, you’ll already have an early table, and swapping a later booking onboard is far easier than hunting for an early one.
Scarlet Night moves through the ship in a clear sequence: the story in the Roundabout, the opening, activations across Decks 6 and 7, the Red Room, then the pool and The Manor. Virgin calls it “a full ship activation,” with pop-ups, flash mobs, secret bars, karaoke and shadow performances (per Virgin’s Scarlet Night page, updated July 14, 2025).

| Typical time | What’s happening | Where | For an early night? |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8 PM | The Myth of Scarlet Night | Roundabout | Don’t miss — this is the story |
| 9 PM | Opening Event | Roundabout | Don’t miss |
| After the opening | Pop-ups, flash mobs, secret bars, karaoke | Decks 6 and 7 | Wander for 30–60 minutes |
| Later (check app) | The Octopus Garden | Red Room | Worth it if it starts before 10:30 |
| Late (check app) | Pool finale, then After Party | Deck 15 pool, then The Manor | Night owls only |
Treat every time in that table as typical, not fixed. Some guides list the opening at 8 PM, Virgin’s own page says 9 PM, and some sailors report later starts. Your app schedule for that night overrides all of them. If you’re not sure where the Roundabout or the Red Room sits, our interactive deck plans show every venue before you board.
The most theatrical parts of Scarlet Night happen early and indoors. The late hours are mostly party. If you want the show without the stamina test, here’s how we’d spend the evening.
Finish an early dinner and change. Virgin suggests visiting its Scarlet Night “Glam Station” before the party, which is the easy way to add a little sparkle without packing it yourself. Aim to leave your cabin by 7:45.
This is the storytelling piece, and it gives the rest of the night its meaning. Get to the Roundabout 10 to 15 minutes early, because the space fills fast and you’ll want a clear view.
Stay near the Roundabout for the opening. If you only see one part of Scarlet Night, make it this one.
This is where the ship comes alive, with flash mobs, pop-up performers and secret bars. Don’t plant yourself in one spot. Do a slow loop and let the night find you.
If the app shows The Octopus Garden in the Red Room starting around now, catch it. If it’s later, call it a night. You’ve seen the story, the opening and the ship-wide energy.
Going straight to the pool is the classic Scarlet Night mistake. The sailors who do it miss everything that happens on Decks 6 and 7 and in the Roundabout, which is exactly the part this plan is built around.
Wear anything red, at whatever level of effort you like. Virgin’s FAQ says “there are no dress code rules here,” and its own dress guide puts it simply: “The only suggestion? Wear something red.”

Think of what you’d wear to a nice dinner, then make one or two pieces red. That’s it.
Nobody checks, and nobody will think less of a man in a red polo. Plenty of Sailors keep it exactly that simple.
Pro Tip: Pack one red item that layers, such as a sweater, cardigan or wrap. It works for Scarlet Night on any itinerary, from a warm Caribbean deck to a chilly northern evening, and it means you don’t have to buy anything new.
The pool finale can depend on the weather. Virgin’s FAQ describes Scarlet Night as taking over Decks 6 and 7 and culminating on Deck 15 around the pool, with that finale marked “weather pending.”
You’ll see sailors talking about an “indoor Scarlet Night” on Brilliant Lady and on Alaska sailings. Virgin’s official language for the Deck 15 pool finale is still “weather pending.” On Brilliant Lady, Virgin’s March 12, 2025 entertainment announcement says Scarlet Night has been reimagined with “new choreography, new songs, and new moments.” Our Brilliant Lady entertainment guide covers what’s different on her.
For the 8-to-11 plan, almost nothing changes. The Roundabout, Decks 6 and 7 and the Red Room are all indoors. A cold or rainy night only affects the part you were planning to skip anyway. If Virgin moves anything, the change will appear in the app, so check it before you head out.
You can skip it, and nobody will notice. Some Sailors enjoy a quiet dinner, order room service through Shipeats, and turn in early. Others prefer a regular show or a lounge on a different night. Our entertainment and shows guide and nightlife guide cover the alternatives across the voyage.
Booking Tip: If an early bedtime matters to you on every night, not just Scarlet Night, choose your cabin with that in mind. Our Cabin Selector scores every cabin for noise, so you can check what sits above and around you before you book.
Virgin describes Scarlet Night as a shipwide activation and doesn’t list a booking requirement for the main evening. If any individual element needs booking on your sailing, it will show in the app.
No. The pool party is only the finale. You can enjoy everything before it in dry clothes, and you can leave before anyone reaches Deck 15.
The easiest option is to wear red to dinner and go straight to the Roundabout. The PJ party is a separate night with its own plan, and on Brilliant Lady it runs a little differently (see our Brilliant Lady PJ Party guide).
Yes. It’s the clearest taste of Virgin’s playful, irreverent personality you’ll get on any sailing. Our first-time tips cover the rest of what to expect onboard.
Scarlet Night appears in your app once you’re onboard. The best parts happen between 8 and roughly 10:30, and a red shirt is all the costume you need. Book an early dinner, see the story and the opening, walk Decks 6 and 7, and leave the pool party to the night owls without any guilt.
